In 1963 comic duo Flanders and Swann composed Slow Train - a lament
for some of the many railway lines proposed for closure by Dr
Beeching. Among the destinations listed in their song is the
refrain from St Erth to St Ives . Constructed in 1877 as the last
broad gauge line to be built in the UK, the St Ives branch did not
close in the 1960s and survives to this day - now widely regarded
as one of the most scenic railways in Europe. How did it escape
closure, and how did it come to be built in the first place? Why
did the war departments of the world have their eyes on St Ives in
the years before the First World War? How did a town once renowned
for the inescapable smell of fish become one of the most popular
tourist resorts in the UK? Did the Great Western Railway invent the
Cornish Riviera? Why was a heliport proposed for St Erth? Where did
a 32-ton ballast digger end-up in 2008? And how did two young men
find themselves four miles from the nearest station in 1860 ?
Containing over 100 images, mostly in colour and many never
published before, this book sets out to answer these and many more
questions.

The recent nomination and confirmation of Sonia Sotomayor as a U.S.
Supreme Court Justice refocused public attention on the selection
criteria that colleges and universities use to admit students. For
decades the Supreme Court has repeatedly been asked to decide the
constitutionality of racial and ethnic preferences in college
admissions. However, this preoccupation with admissions neglects
other important considerations in achieving campus diversity and
narrowing gaps in educational attainment. What circumstances
motivate students to attend and succeed in college? What factors
influence individual students' decisions whether to apply and, if
admitted, whether to enroll. Based on administrative data from the
Texas Higher Education Opportunity Project (THEOP), recent studies
have revealed these key insights: * The high schools that students
attend are highly decisive for predicting which students pursue
postsecondary education. * Application behavior (rather than
admissions criteria) holds the key to diversification of college
campuses along socioeconomic, geographic, and demographic lines. *
Campus diversity is an interim goal for the broader vision of
opening the pathways to leadership. The compelling articles in this
volume of The ANNALS go beyond the worn argument that admission
criteria are solely responsible for determining campus diversity.
The authors address a broad range of questions in college decision
making - from application to enrollment, college performance, and
graduation. The first section of this volume reviews the precursors
to college attendance as the first step to campus diversification.
The authors discuss the importance of a college habitus. Articles
also focus on the strong association between the ethno-racial
composition of high schools and first-college preference. Along
with key articles on narrowing the gender and ethnic gaps in
specific fields of study, academic performance, and graduation
rates, this volume also includes an analysis of the consequences of
Texas's Top Ten Percent Law guaranteeing admission to any Texas
public university for high school seniors who graduated in the top
decile of their high school class. This forward-looking volume of
The ANNALS is a requisite for students and scholars who want to
examine alternatives that narrow ethnic gaps throughout the
postsecondary cycle and provide more opportunities for talented,
ambitious youth from disadvantaged environments to succeed, as
Justice Sotomayor did.

Over a thousand years ago the Anglo-Saxons used willow bark to
treat headaches; modern pharmaceutical companies use the same basic
ingredient - salicin.
They boiled the bark in holy water and added a few other
unnecessary ingredients, but they had a basic treatment that worked
a millennia ago And they called this the Dark Ages? Northern Plant
Lore explores the plants and herbs used by the Anglo Saxons for
medicinal purposes, and compares them to the list of plant and
herbs proven effective by modern medical science. Not every plant
they used worked, but Northern Plant Lore will show you which ones
did, and how you can use them today.

This research presents a method of aggregating, or reducing the
resolution, of a commonly available DoD simulation. It addresses
the differences between varying levels of resolution and scope used
in the Department of Defense's hierarchy of models pyramid. A data
representation that aggregates engagement-level simulation data to
use at a lower resolution level, the mission-level, is presented
and analyzed. Two formats of implementing this data representation
are developed and compared: the rigid cylinder format and the
expanding tables format. The rigid cylinder format provides an
intuitive way to visualize the data representation and is used to
develop the theory. The expanding tables format expands upon the
capabilities of the rigid cylinder format and reduces the
simulation time. Tests are run to show the effects of each format
for various combinations of engagement-level simulation inputs. A
final set of tests highlight the loss in accuracy incurred from
reducing the number of samples used by the mission-level
simulation.
This study attempts to determine what is required of senior
military and political leaders to reconcile differences and reduce
tensions among global, domestic, and theater imperatives by
examining the evidence from Operation Torch, the Vietnam War, and
the Persian Gulf War. The most significant contributing factors
that promoted or inhibited the fusion in each case study are
determined, analyzed, and synthesized to provide implications for
the development and selection of future strategists. Although it
may appear obvious, this study found that people, situations, and
ideas matter. Leaders who possessed an above-average intellect, the
confidence to transcend their own sphere of control and influence,
an impartial and informed military perspective, and the ability to
stay focused on the essentials excelled in formulating balanced
strategy. The evidence also suggests that a flawed theater-military
strategy is likely to prevent the attainment of global and domestic
objectives; and, once set in motion, may become difficult or
impossible to rectify.
A data security breach occurs when there is a loss or theft of, or
other unauthorized access to, sensitive personally identifiable
information that could result in the potential compromise of the
confidentiality or integrity of data. This book provides an
overview of state security breach notification laws applicable to
entities that collect, maintain, own, possess, or license personal
information. This book describes information security and security
breach notification requirements in the Office of Management and
Budget's "Breach Notification Policy," the Health Insurance
Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the Health Information
Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH), and the
Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA).

This book, Built Stronger, "I Am What I Am," explores the two
important issues of power and success through the eyes of people
from different parts of the world and different backgrounds. In
encounters with each of these, and in situations where their lives
could be observed, the author has had the great opportunity to
share in the love of God and His salvation. Using Scripture verses
as a background, the message the author conveys is one of
encouragement-encouragement to know who you are and to whom you
belong-for he believes that God will equip you (the reader) with a
solid self-esteem that will help you to be "built stronger" for
whatever life brings your way. Herbert C. Long is a man who has
known great triumph and great tragedy yet has a faith in God and a
positive attitude about life that is infectious. Many years spent
in Corporate America as a troubleshooter in demand has brought him
across the paths of those who need both faith in Jesus Christ and
encouragement to rise above their problems by seeing God's plans
for their lives. The author was brought up on an "old-fashioned"
religion that majored on guilt. It was later in life that Herbert
Long came to experience God's grace. This is what he sought to
share with others as he traveled the world in his long career. He
now sees himself as a messenger delivering the message of the love
of God and the positive energy that comes from knowing His grace.
Herbert lives in Cape Coral, FL with his wife Nancy.
